Zapbox is an innovative mixed reality (MR) platform that combines the physical and digital worlds through an affordable and accessible system. Zapbox leverages the capabilities of smartphones to offer users an immersive MR experience without the need for expensive hardware. It includes a headset that uses a phone's screen to display digital content, along with controllers that enable interaction with virtual objects. This setup allows users to explore augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications in various fields such as gaming, education, and training. Zapbox aims to democratize MR technology by making it widely available and easy to use, promoting creativity and engagement across diverse user groups.

 I was responsible for various elements of the product design, graphic design and the experiences.

I conceptualised and designed the onboarding journey for the initial setup of Zapbox. Originally, the journey was developer-focused and lacked cohesive design elements, making it functional but not engaging.

My goal was to elevate the user experience and impart a premium feel to the product from the outset.

Zapbox utilises 3D shapes for its key graphics, so I integrated these shapes into the onboarding process. This approach visually guided users through the steps required to achieve the perfect setup for their Zapbox.

To help the developer with animation transitions I created an animated version to explain how the elements interact with each other. Although the user journey is very important to product design, I also feel the way the UI animates is really important to getting a premium looking product.

Onboarding

I was also tasked with enhancing the packaging design for Zapbox.

The original design featured a simplistic view of the product on a white background. Due to the transparent plastic used in much of the headset, this made it difficult to see most of the Zapbox on the cover.

To address this, we decided to incorporate more of the branding colors, shapes, and an image of someone using the product. While I personally found the chosen model a bit cheesy, I believe the overall redesign made the product packaging significantly more appealing.

 I also illustrated a more interesting pattern for the cardboard inlay but we decided it was not really needed. Here is the sketch,

I also designed most of the initial experiences that appeared on the App Store as an introduction to Zapbox and its capabilities. 

I created user flows for all of these experiences, created all artwork including logos, iconography and any other UI elements.
