At Zappar, The Athlete’s foot tasked us to create an AR activation for the new Mural that appears at the entrance of the Atlanta flagship store.
The Athlete's Foot (TAF), founded in 1971 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was the first U.S. specialty store for athletic footwear. Now a global retailer with over 550 stores in 30 countries.
We had a very tight turn around of a Week, so I worked alone in coming up with the idea and creating everything in After Effects, Illustrator and Photoshop.
With a lot of these Murals that come to life, the usual approach would be to make the painting start to move as it is shown on the wall. I wanted to try something different and instead use the artists images to create a short narrative, to give the viewer something fresher and more intriguing.
The whole mural shows the some of the key figures of Atlanta being held together by the pink ribbon that is pouring out of the TAF shoe box.
I made this ribbon come to life and reveal the different characters along the way, finishing with the doves of peace and Martin Luther King Jr.
Below is a mock up of the mural animation over a photo of the location in Atlanta. I made some of the elements break out of the frame to add another level of WOW to the experience;
Here is the video without the mock up element;
I also designed the double sided graphic that appears on a plaque in front of the mural.
The client has had such a positive response from the activation that they want to update the animation with new parts to reflect events that are happening throughout the year including Martin Luther King day.
