MONKEY SHOULDER
COCKTAIL GAME
Client - Monkey Shoulder
At Zappar we were tasked to create an AR experience that would teach users how to create the flagship cocktails with Monkey Shoulder whisky. The client wanted a fun and engaging experience that would encourage repeat visits and also be educational.

We decided to create a game that would take the user through each step of the cocktail making process. Using our knowledge of addictive mechanics, we created a simple mini game for each step.
Users need to scan the QR code on the Monkey Shoulder box artwork and follow the web link to see the splash page with a launch button. Tapping launch will take the user to a 3D version of the box where they will be prompted to place it on a flat surface. Once placed an intro animation will play and the mini bar will appear. (Images are from my Userflow, so may differ on the final experience)
The user can pick from 5 cocktails to make, each cocktail is a different level of difficulty. Starting from super easy to very hard. To alter the difficulty we added more steps to the latter cocktails and made the mini games more challenging by upping the speed and reaction time.
We created 6 mini games using these 5 mechanics.
Game 1- Thumb roll glass / shaker on hand ( Pick a glass / shaker)
The player has to accurately trace the line in the direction of the arrows to perform the perfect thumb roll.
The line will be more wavy the harder the difficulty.
Game 2 - Fill with ice
The bartender needs to scoop the correct amount of ice for the drink.
Simply, the user taps the screen to start scooping ice, there will be a meter that moves from empty
to overflowing, the user has to tap the screen as
close to perfect as possible to scoop the correct amount of ice. Tapping either side of perfect will
lose accuracy points.
Game 3 - Shake
The user must swipe left and right repeatedly to fill the meter in the time. If the user stops swiping mid game, the meter will go back down again.
Game 4 - Stir
The directional arrows will come in from the right of the screen and move left, the user has to swipe the screen in the direction of the arrow when it passes over the target area.
The more accurate the user is, the better the score. Each swipe will be assisted with a reaction like 'Great!' or 'Not Quite'. Perfect swipes will give a nice ripple animation.
For the harder versions the arrows will move faster.
Game 5 - Strain
Similar to an archery game mechanic, the player has to tap the screen when the Monkey circle moves over the centre of the target. The monkey circle will move randomly around the target area, up and down, left and right. The player simply has to react quickly to tap the screen when it moves over the middle area.
The harder games will have a more jittery Monkey circle so it is tougher to tap at the correct time.
Once the player has completed all of the steps they will be presented a score for the cocktail. They will then be given an image showing the players score and some Monkey Shoulder branding that can be shared directly from the experience to various social media platforms.
The images below also show my paused menu design and one of the step, screen designs.
