LEGOLAND MYTHICA
Client - Legoland
🏆 The Magical Forest section won an Auggie award for ‘Best in location based entertainment’ 2023 🏆
At Zappar, we created a full AR experience for the new Mythica section in the Legoland parks.

I was the sole UX / UI designer on the project. I also created the printed plaques that appeared within the parks themselves and some VFX.
We wanted to make something that wasn't just an addition but very much an extension of the Mythica world.
The app is split up into four different sections, each with their own challenges and fun activities;
The Portal : Explore the Realms
In this section users can place their very own Mythica portal.
Once the portal is placed, users can walk through it to enter a Mythica realm which is full of animated creatures and vibrant scenery. There are four realm buttons along the bottom of the screen, in each realm the user is tasked to collect 3 orbs, each orb contains a fact about the Mythica world. Once the user has completed all three realms they unlock a secret fourth realm and earn a special Mythica plaque.
(Example images are all concept mock ups from the UI flow and may differ in final experience)
The Creature : Scan and bring them to life
This section is almost an app in its own right.
I designed scan points that were placed next to the physical Lego version of each Mythica creature. The apps scanner allows users to scan the QR code and bring the Lego statue to life. Each time a creature is scanned, the user earns a Mythica card that shows the stats of that particular creature. They can then view their digital card collection in this section of the app too.
I designed all of the stat cards which are going to be made into physical collectibles!
Take a Photo
Here, users can take a selfie inside a Mythica realm with the main Mythica hero animating behind them.
Pop Badges
Visitors to the park can win Pop badges, circular, plastic badges that can be scanned using the app. When the badge is scanned they turn into peep holes into various sections of a realm. Users can watch fun animations with some of the side characters in the world.
THE MAGICAL FOREST
Our AR experience was so well received, we were asked back to create another experience for the new attraction, The Magical Forest!
This new attraction was an interactive walk, through the Magical Forest where park visitors could meet a whole load of new characters from the Mythica world.
This time we gave the experience a narrative. The unicorn, Bits ‘n’ Bobs, has lost his wing and needs someone to help him find it. As the user walks through the forest, there will be Mythica codes that they need to scan, to unveil the next part of the story. We created new games and animations that interacted with the real world scenery and included a giant mother dragon that flies in and lands at the end of the forest trail.
I was responsible for all of the UI and extra assets in the new experience. I was also part of the concept and ideation team throughout.
We created a new map section that acted as a nice looking, check sheet. Each time the user scans a code, they will see the corresponding orb glow on the map. This would hopefully mean that no one misses any activation points along the path and enjoys the full story.

We also created the simulation experience for the dragon cave.
Legoland created a Dragon cave out of a shipping container that had multiple screens inside to simulate windows in the cave. We created the concept, storyboard and sourced an external 3D team to build the animation loop. As this was a last minute, extra for Legoland, I had to create the storyboard in 2 days. The main challenge was creating a narrative that works over 5 screens, everything had to work in sequence and make sense. The story had to be short but engaging for the audience walking through the cave. Below are the main storyboard screens I created for the experience, you can see some of it in the Magical Forest video above.
